Garage Door Won't Close: Causes and Fixes
Why Your Garage Door Won't Close
A garage door that won't close is one of the most common complaints we hear. The good news is that the cause is usually one of a few well-known issues, and many can be diagnosed quickly.
The most common reasons a garage door won't close are: misaligned safety sensors, obstructed tracks, broken springs or cables, opener limit settings that need adjustment, and damaged or warped tracks.
Check the Safety Sensors First
The photo-eye sensors at the base of your garage door are the most common cause of a door that won't close. These sensors detect objects in the door's path and prevent it from closing if something is detected.
Check that both sensors have steady lights (not blinking), that nothing is blocking the beam between them, and that they're properly aligned. Even a slight bump can knock a sensor out of alignment. You can try gently adjusting them until the indicator lights are steady.
When to Call a Professional
If the sensors look fine and the door still won't close, the problem may be with the springs, cables, tracks, or opener mechanism. These components are under tension or involve electrical systems and should only be repaired by a trained technician.
If your door closes partway and then reverses, this could indicate a track obstruction, a force setting issue, or a problem with the door's balance. A professional can diagnose the exact cause and fix it safely.
